New ‘Westworld’ Trailer Brings Out The Man in Black

“No choice you ever made was your own. You have always been a prisoner. What if I told you that I’m here to set you free?”

Last night, HBO gave fans the best glimpse yet of Westworld, the upcoming sci-fi series from Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy, and J.J. Abrams that re-envisions the classic 1973 film written and directed by Michael Crichton. The trailer also fully introduces the major players of the series, including Evan Rachel Woods’ Dolores Abernathy, a young woman in the old west who appears to be reaching a startling conclusion: her entire existence is a lie.

In fact, everything in Westworld is a carefully constructed facade populated by androids like Dolores, who were built only to pleasure their human masters. However, the Man in Black, as played by Ed Harris, may have something to say about that. The trailer plays up the similarities between Harris’ character and the Gunslinger played by Yul Brenner in the original film while also implying that he was created by Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright), who now regards the Man in Black as a mistake:

The trailer also pulls back the curtain on Anthony Hopkins’ Dr. Robert Ford, the creative director of Westworld itself, who insists that it is not a theme park. And while Ford doesn’t seem to be a malevolent figure, he’s clearly not a “friend” to Dolores or the other androids in Westworld. There’s a rebellion brewing, and the human masters had better watch their backs!

Fair warning, this trailer has a few minor NSFW moments, mostly for violence.

Westworld will premiere on Sunday, October 2 on HBO.
