Nigel Grigg of ITN Architects has really put his imagination to magnificent use over the past few years. The Australian designer seems to be playing more the role of a magician these days. Just take a gander at his past 5 years of work (most notably his Abbotsford apartment project) and you will quickly understand. Grigg and his associates were challenged with a gargantuan task of transforming what once was a Catholic Technical college into a series of modern, stylish apartments. By the looks of it, they succeeded with flying colors.

ITN Architects rendered two 3-story apartments from the original structure. First, they removed the roof and installed a new floor. Then they added a series of decks and balconies to give the apartments not only a sense of larger size and space, but equally a convincing sense of modern style. The go to resource material? Timber. Believe it or not, in an age when many designers are constantly looking for the next new super construction material, ITN used the most traditional source to create a pair of versatile living spaces.

Each apartment was split from the original structure so that, among other things, each flat possesses its own street entrance. The structure was reinforced by steel columns, though the residences retain their original timber beams. The stairs and floors are slick hardwood surfaces that complement the overall homeliness and accessibility of the apartments.
