Marc Guggenheim Teases ‘The Ray’ Animated Series

Imagine living in a world where the fascists have won, and they control the entire government while persecuting minorities. That’s a little close to home these days, but DC’s next animated series is supposed to offer up hope to a world under the heels of a Nazi regime.

Via TV Insider, Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim spoke about his upcoming CW Seed animated series, Freedom Fighters: The Ray, which takes place on Earth-X, the alternate world where the Nazis won World War II. Because of that familiar faces like The Flash, Green Arrow, and even Supergirl work for the Nazi regime, as voiced by the performers who play them in the CW’s weekly drama series. But this world has heroes of its own, including the Ray, whom Guggenheim describes as “a normal guy who gets superpowers, with all the complications and wish fulfillment that entails.” The Ray is also the first gay DC hero to headline his own animated series, and Guggenheim added that “in true superheroic fashion, his obligations are a complication for his love life.”

“It’s called Freedom Fighters: The Ray for a very specific reason,” continued Guggenheim. “We knew we wanted to establish the Freedom Fighters and Earth-X. In Multiversity, Grant Morrison came up with an idea we really responded to: The Freedom Fighters are made up of various minorities targeted by Nazis—women, gay men, Jews. We wanted to honor that idea. At the same time, it’s an origin story about the Earth-1 iteration of The Ray.”

Freedom Fighters: The Ray is expected to debut this fall on CW Seed.
