If you’re a fan of ice cream and (to a lesser degree) cookies, you know all about the slightly crunchy, sweet magical flavor that is sprinkles. Whether they’re chocolate, rainbow, or any other flavor we love them. We enjoy them so much, we just might add a few dashes to other foods as well. They’re sugary, delicious, and definitely not hurting anyone (except for maybe our waistlines). At least that’s the case in the US. Apparently not in the United Kingdom.
This is because of British bakery recently came under fire for using “illegal” sprinkles and was forced to shut its doors to remove baked goods that contained the suspicious sprinkles.
The bakery, located in Leeds, is called Get Baked and they took to Facebook earlier this month to explain to their customers that they’d be closed for a handful of days for myriad reasons including a “lovely visit from Trading Standards” after a meddling busybody who knows way too much about sugary ingredients gave them an anonymous tip that illegal sprinkles were being used.
Apparently, the sprinkles the bakery was using are banned in the UK. This is because, while fine in the US, the ingredient E127 is only approved to be used in cocktail cherries. Why it’s illegal otherwise, we don’t know.
It’s been dubbed “Sprinklegate” and, instead of sitting idly and letting their business suffer, the folks at Get Baked took to social media to say that not only will they remove the illegal ingredients, but went on to talk about how much they love sprinkles, how awful British sprinkles are, all while calling out the “sad little Jane” who reported them. While it’s a bummer that this whole ordeal had to happen, at least the people at Get Baked are able to have a sense of humor about it.
