Johns Hopkins Student Invention Keeps Your Burrito From Unraveling, Finally the Day Has Come!

In the hierarchy of inventions, it’s difficult to beat the likes of electricity, the computer, the printing press, and the compass. But, when it comes to importance, we believe a recent invention from a team of Johns Hopkins students will go down in history just like those we previously mentioned. That’s because they invented edible tape. Yes, you read that right: edible tape. And no, we’re not talking about cramming your gullet full of Scotch tape.

If you don’t know why the students from The Whiting School of Engineering designed what they’re calling “Tastee Tape” you’ve obviously never had a problem with a taco, burrito, or wrap. To us, these types of foods are equal parts delicious and impossible to keep together.

Thanks to the chemical and biomolecular engineering students, we’ll never have to worry about our burrito exploding in a mess of meat, cheese, and salsa on our lap on the subway ever again. That’s because their edible table will keep all that goodness inside.

You might be wondering how one goes about creating an edible tape. “First, we learned about the science around tape and different adhesives, and then we worked to find edible counterparts,” said Tyler Guarino, one of the students, in a Johns Hopkins news release.

While they haven’t revealed what the tape is made of because they’re still working on getting it patented, Guarino did say: “What I can say is that all its ingredients are safe to consume, are food grade, and are common food and dietary additives.”

The tape is not only edible, but its adhesive properties are even activated by moisture. This means it doesn’t matter how sloppy you enjoy your burrito or wrap. It will stay together thanks to the new greatest invention in the history of the world. Well, at least that’s our opinion.
