The volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland has become active again, and its eruption is affecting the lives of many. It began erupting on Wednesday night, with Thursday early morning seeing its peak activity. According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the lava has reached too far west, flowing to areas it has never reached before. Moreover, the speed of the lava flow was recorded to exceed 100 meters per hour on Thursday. The agency noted that the hazard assessment will be updated on Friday if they don’t see any changes.
The volcano’s eruption has also impacted the iconic Blue Lagoon in Iceland, with a video capturing lava covering the famous tourist destination’s parking lot. The drone footage is as dramatic as it is frightening. According to ABC News, people have been requested to evacuate the Blue Lagoon as well as the Icelandic town of Grindavik, which is close by.
The Icelandic volcano is a rift activity volcano. Thus, it isn’t a conical mountain spewing magma up the top but instead, the earth pulling apart along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to ooze a massive amount of the same. This form of eruption is less dangerous and explosive, mostly involving lava slowly flowing to different areas. The most recent volcanic eruption featured a fissure that measured up to 1.8 miles long. However, it isn’t the first time this volcano has erupted this year. The Icelandic volcano has erupted a whopping six times since the beginning of this year.
