The War of the Rohirrim Gets a Middling Rotten Tomatoes Score

The Lord of the Rings animated prequel movie War of the Rohirrim is nearing its theatrical release date and has received its first reviews. Taking place 183 years before the events of Peter Jackson’s iconic trilogy, the film centers around Helm Hammerhand, the then-king of Rohan. Following a surprise attack, Hammerhand engages in an all-out war against the invading Dunlendings forces in order to save his kingdom and family. However, the film has so far garnered sub-par reactions, resulting in a relatively low Rotten Tomatoes score for the franchise.

The War of the Rohirrim gets middling reviews

Many critics have given middling reviews to The Lord of The Rings: War of the Rohirrim, with some criticizing the project for its “uninteresting narrative.”

QiiBo‘s Jorge Rivera Rubio has scored The War of the Rohirrim 3 out of 5 on Rotten Tomatoes, noting, “It’s a better experience than the three films about Bilbo Baggins and the Dwarf Crusade, but totally inferior to Jackson’s crown jewels.”

Jonathan Sim of ComingSoon also echoed Rubio’s sentiments in his review of The War of the Rohirrim, remarking that the movie “fails to reach its full potential and is a run-of-the-mill experience.”

Meanwhile, The Herald Sun‘s Leigh Paatsch also criticized the story of the movie, stating, “Storytelling-wise, this is all analog good-vs-evil stuff with very little light, shade or complexity to forge a lasting connection to the viewer.”

The War of the Rohirrim’s RT and Metacritic scores are lower than The Rings of Power

These mediocre reviews have impacted the initial Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores of The War of the Rohirrim. At the time of writing, the movie sports an uninspiring critic score of 59% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Over at Metacritic, the film holds a similar score of 57. Of the 22 critics to have rated the movie on the website so far, only eight have provided positive reviews of The War of the Rohirrim. 13 reviewers have given the movie mixed results, with one being counted as a negative rating.

Consequently, The War of the Rohirrim has scored a lower rating than Prime Video’s recent Rings of Power series. All entries in Peter Jackson’s trilogy have a higher score than 92 on Rotten Tomatoes, but the polarizing Rings of Power still holds a critic rating of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. In a similar fashion, the show beats out The War of the Rohirrim on Metacritic, with a respectable rating of 70.
