During the final episodes of “American Horror Story’s” first season, the entire Harmon family died before their spirits found peace and happiness within the Murder House, while Constance made off with Vivien and Tate’s child, who may or may not be the Antichrist.
But come fall 2012, the second season of “American Horror Story” will be a completely different kind of beast.
During a conference call with the press, “American Horror Story” co-creator Ryan Murphy and FX President John Landgraf revealed that the series was planned from the start as a “seasonal anthology.” Which means that next season will be a brand new story, possibly with a completely overhauled cast.
“The (haunted) house is done,” stated Murphy. “Every season of the show will be a different haunting. That’s always been the plan. Every season of the show will have a beginning, middle and end, and all new characters and setting.”
“There are all kinds of different American horror stories to tell,” added Murphy. “There are serial killing stories, prison stories, true crime stories… Each year of the show is designed to be a little miniseries unto itself. The only thing we’re not open to doing is a season on vampires.”
Murphy did hint that some actors may return as different characters, but Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott will not be the lead characters next year.
“We’re still negotiating with a handful (of the cast members) about returning,” noted Murphy. “We’re also meeting with new actors whom we’ve targeted roles for. I will say that Connie and Dylan will not be playing the leads of the show in the second season. We’d love for them to come back and do something, maybe a smaller role or a cameo.”
The anthology approach does hold some risk, since “American Horror Story” has proven to be one of FX’s most popular series. Last night’s season finale drew 3.22 million viewers.
“I was very confident from the beginning that [“American Horror Story”] would work,” said Landgraf. “And the idea of starting from Ground Zero and rebuilding the entire show every season is exciting.”
The second season of “American Horror Story” is expected to premiere in the fall of 2012.
