Now that the success of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol has made Tom Cruise a hot commodity again, he’s lining up projects left and right. There’s a sequel to Top Gun in the works (why?) and a remake of Van Helsing to boot (WHY?), what’s left but an American classic that was, in itself, a remake of a Japanese classic?
Variety now reports that Tom Cruise has gone and attached himself to MGM’s remake of The Magnificent Seven, a classic western with an all-star cast including Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Eli Wallach and Horst Buchholz, who was thought to be a rising star at the time. (It didn’t happen.) The film found a group of seven gunslingers recruited to defend a small peasant village from an army of outlaws, and was such a hit that it spawned three sequels and a television series by the same name.
MGM has not yet attached a director, and has yet to even hire a writer for the proposed remake, meaning that if this new Magnificent Seven even comes to fruition, it’s a few years down the road. While concerns over quality are bound to come up, especially when remaking an established classic, it will be fun to see which top of the line stars MGM approaches to fill out the film’s cast.
