Konami’s decision to separate Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain hasn’t gone unnoticed. At first it appeared that they would be giving us just a taste of what’s to come, but now we know we’re getting a lot less for only half the price things aren’t looking so good.
Director Hideo Kojima took to Twitter to describe the scope of Ground Zeroes when compared to The Phantom Pain, which is coming at a later date. He commented (translated roughly from Japanese):
Ground Zeroes has a relatively small field compared to the main game, which is hundreds of times larger.
He even described Ground Zeroes as a tutorial for the full game. So does that mean you really need to play Ground Zeroes in order to get the most out of The Phantom Pain?If so, that experience will come at a cost of $90.
With such a high asking price, it’s hard for me to imagine this being recommendable to anyone but those who are terribly impatient… basically, Metal Gear fanatics such as myself.
The amount of work that will be required to release and market Ground Zeroes could have been put into pushing The Phantom Pain out sooner. It pains me to think that this packaging format can and probably will affect other franchises going into the future. The day of $90 games is finally here.
