CES 2014: John Legend, Walk off the Earth Headline Polk Audio Hard Rock Party

Most days, the convention floor at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show is open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

So what happens after the doors to Las Vegas Convention Center close and 150,000 show attendees find themselves in Sin City with nothing else to do?

Awesome parties are what happen…did you really even need to ask?

As always, CraveOnline follows all the CES fun, wherever it may go.  And Tuesday night, it went to Vegas’ legendary Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, where Polk Audio and Sound United hosted a blow-out private CES party, featuring a high-energy performance by Canadian alt-rockers Walk off the Earth and an intimate set by soulful superstar John Legend.

Walk Off the Earth was just happy to get to the show at all, consider the band was stuck in Toronto earlier in the day, victims of the polar vortex that shut down huge swaths of east coast air travel this week.  Not contend to let a big hole open in the evening’s entertainment, party sponsor Sound United sent their corporate jet north to gather up the group and get them to Vegas in time for the show.

The five-piece outfit responded with a bouncy set, revving up the 200-plus partygoers with an eclectic mix of juiced-up acoustic material, including a crowd-pleasing rendition of their jaunty 2012 single “Red Hands.”

But Legend was undeniably the star of the night.  Inviting the crowd to encircle his Steinway baby grand, Legend glided effortlessly through a gorgeous set of the nine-time Grammy winner’s hits, including his breakout single “Ordinary People.”

Legend encouraged partygoers to sing along several times and brought the room to a standstill with a jazz-infused riff on the Bruce Springsteen hit “Dancing in the Dark.” Legend recounted the first time he covered the song at the request of Questlove for an appearance on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” only to repeat the performance — at the behest of the Boss himself — at a special show last February honoring Springsteen as the 2013 MusiCares Person of the Year.
