First Look: Captain Marvel #1

There was a big hullabaloo when Carol Danvers finally shed the Ms. Marvel thong and stepped up to become Captain Marvel, getting her own series from Kelly Sue DeConnick. That new book also came with artists who were generally a bit of an acquired taste (although very worthwhile once you acquired it, as noted in my review of Captain Marvel #17) and may have presented a challenge to some folks trying to get into the new series. Now, there’s an All-New Marvel Now extravaganza relaunching Captain Marvel with a new #1, and this time it’s as mainstream as can be, with artist David Lopez on the job doing some beautiful straightforward work.

These days, Carol Danvers has taken up residence in the head of the Statue of Liberty, thanks to a generous offer from Mayor J. Jonah Jameson, but she’s about to leave Earth altogether for a while. “Everything about Carol wants to go UP. Chin up, head up, heart up, up, up, UP. And I thought, ‘What if we let her go?’” said DeConnick.

Check out your first look at Captain Marvel #1, due out March 12, featuring a variant cover from Leinil Yu.
