NYIAS 2014 this year saw the introduction of everything from new super cars by McLaren and Rolls-Royce to anniversary re-issues of classics like the Ford Mustang and Mazda MX-5.
However, while it may not be the sexist news at NYIAS 2014, it’s the debut of a new 2015 Toyota Camry that drew a lot of industry eyes during the event’s two day press preview. The uninitiated might hear Camry and “harumph” out a “big deal.” It’s not a sports car. No one scores its 0-60 time. It’s not rendered from carbon fiber. Still, there’s a simple reason why it a new Camry is very newsworthy. It’s the top selling car in the world.
Depending on what stat sheet you look at, there’s a some sort of a Camry built somewhere on the planet once every 30 seconds or so — and the resulting pile doesn’t go unsold. Strong, quality automakers like Honda, Hyundai and Kia all want to kick a chunk out of that massive market share, but they don’t yet have the raw manufacturing power to make enough cars to knock Camry off its perch.
To its credit, Toyota could set on its collective arse and count its money while selling plenty of Camry. But, they offered up an entire makeover for the popular car. The 2015 Camry includes more than 2,000 new parts and some fresh exterior styling. The most striking flare is the larger, more aggressive grill with notes lifted from cars in Toyota’s sister company’s line at Lexus.
The new Camry will go on sale later this year with an estimated price tag south of $25,000.
