NBA Commissioner Adam Silver told reporters over the weekend the NBA would act swiftly in regards to the leaked racist audio of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling. Silver delivered on that promise Tuesday.
At approximately 2:15 PM EST, Silver addressed the media, announcing Sterling’s punishment: a complete ban for life and a $2.5 million fine.
Silver said, “Effective immediately, Mr. Sterling is banned for life, with the Clippers organization and the NBA.”
The ban includes attending not only games, but all practices, any team facilities, board meetings and league activities, along with business or player decisions.
Silver proceeded to say that he will urge the Board of Governors to exercise authority to force the sale of the team. Although he wouldn’t go into specifics, Silver did imply his actions are constitutional within the NBA’s by-laws by saying, “We have authority to act as I have recommended.”
Silver said the process to begin the sale of the team would start immediately.
When asked if Sterling will put up a fight, Silver responded, “I have no idea.” Silver did say that Mr. Sterling acknowledged it was his voice on the tape, but did not express any other views (including any remorse whatsoever).
The $2.5 million fine will be donated to groups dedicated to anti-descrimination.
