Rick Remender Shares Details About Marvel’s Axis Event

In the opening arc of Rick Remender’s Uncanny Avengers, the newly formed Avengers Unity Squad of humans and mutants went up against the Red Skull after he mutilated the body of Charles Xavier to gain his mutant powers of telepathy.

The fourth issue of Uncanny Avengers also hinted that the Red Skull would become the Red Onslaught, a new incarnation of the evil Onslaught persona that emerged from the minds of Xavier and Magneto during the ‘90s.

While speaking with USA Today, Remender addressed the return of the Red Skull in Axis, an upcoming nine part crossover that will run through several Marvel titles including Remender’s Uncanny Avengers and Captain America, in addition to issues of Loki: Agent of Asgard, Magneto and Iron Man.

“The Red Skull has seen things that Tony Stark is capable of, and seen value in them,” explained Remender, while hinting that several characters will be facing a status quo change by the end of the Axis storyline.

“[The Avengers Unity Squad] have to deal with a threat that is ultimately too big for them to contend with even working together,” continued Remender as he teased the inclusion of Luke Cage, Storm, Deadpool, Medusa,  Kid Apocalypse and Quentin Quire for the heroes as they take on the Red Skull’s allies, Doctor Doom, the Enchantress, Carnage, the Absorbing Man, Hobgoblin and Sabretooth.

At this weekend’s Special Edition of New York Comic-Con, Marvel will announce some of the creative teams attached to the Axis storyline
