LeVar Burton’s Reading Rainbow project has become the most successful Kickstarter campaign to date.
The project, which will see Burton reviving the children’s educational TV series and distributing it freely to schools across America, now has over 100,000 backers and over $5,000,000, making it more popular than the likes of the OUYA console and the Veronica Mars movie, two campaigns which saw backers lining up in their droves to support them.
The Reading Rainbow project aims to improve literacy in US schools, and though it has far surpassed its $1,000,000 goal, the Kickstarter campaign is asking users to donate more money in order to bring the project to more schools.
Along with developing an educational show and website for children to freely visit, the Kickstarter reaching its stretch goal of $5,000,000 means Burton and his team can now bring the service to mobile phones, Xbox and PlayStation consoles, and set-top boxes such as AppleTV and ROKU.
The Kickstarter project ends today. If you want to donate, go here.
