Nick Kyrgios‘s Wimbledon campaign has come to an end after the Aussie teenager fell in four sets to Canada’s Milos Roanic in the quarter-finals at the All England Club overnight.
After shocking world No.1 Rafael Nadal in the fourth round, Kyrgios couldn’t repeat his heroics against eigth-seed Roanic, going down 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 6-4 7-6 (7-4). Speaking after the match, Kyrgios, who will rise to 66 in the rankings, said the Nadal victory had taken a physical toll. “I think it (the Nadal game) had a pretty big impact,” he said.
“I was struggling physically about halfway through the second set. I was feeling sore in a couple of places. But I’m not going to take anything away from him (Roanic). He served unbelievable.”
Roanic fired down 39 aces to become the first Canadian male to reach the semi-finals at Wimbledon. After losing the first set, Roanic broke Kyrgios twice in the second before going on to level the contest. Kyrgios shot out to a 2-0 lead in the third and looked to have the match under control, but Roanic fought back using his giant serve.
The gangly right hander secured the set before holding off Kyrgios in a tie-breaker to claim the fourth. With a semi-final against Roger Federer to look forward to, Roanic said his confidence was high after beating Kyrgios. “To have that kind of win is pretty special,” he said. “It’s another step forward. The goal is to be the No. 1 player in the world, and this is another step towards that goal.”
