Queensland has denied NSW a State of Origin clean sweep after storming to a 32-8 victory in game three at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Wednesday night.
With the series already lost, the Maroons turned on the razzle-dazzle missing from their first two outings to dominate the Blues. Proud of his side’s effort, Queensland coach Mal Meninga said his players wanted to put on a show for their home fans.
“We would’ve liked to have played better rugby league throughout the whole series, but it’s been a dogged affair,” he told Channel Nine. “It was good to be allowed to play a bit of footy (tonight). (Teams) were back the 10 metres, the ruck was a bit better tonight. It allows our special players to do what they do.”
The Maroons had all the territory and possession in the first half but only led 6-2 at the break after a herculean defensive effort from the Blues. Greg Inglis, Darius Boyd and Johnathan Thurston were among the players held up for Queensland, while Aidan Guerra was denied a try by the video referee for off-side.
But the Blues eventually cracked in the 38th minute, Maroons super sub Daly Cherry-Evans weaving through some tired defenders before kicking ahead for captain Cameron Smith to score.
Queensland enjoyed a dream start to the second half when Billy Slater crossed after running onto a flat ball from Justin Hodges. Thurston converted for a 12-2 lead, the home team looking ominous.
NSW desperately needed some inspiration but found it difficult making territory. A penalty kick put the Maroons 12 in front before the Blues scored their first through centre Josh Dugan from a set play.
The dream of completing a clean sweep was temporarily revived, but not for long. Queensland finished the game full of running, late tries to Boyd, Guerra and Cooper Cronk blowing out the margin.
Queensland lock Corey Parker was a deserved man of the match after tormenting the Blues with his off-loads and running for more than 200 metres. Blues captain Paul Gallen was named man of the series.
