Live television is an unpredictable and often amusing beast. That lesson was learnt by “The Project” host Carrie Bickmore last night when she unwittingly held up a piece of her script with a picture of a penis on it.
While the host retained her composure and kept a straight face while reading out a viewer’s comment during the segment, viewers were of course quick on the uptake, swarming to their Twitter accounts to expose the phallic pictorial gaffe.
“What have u been doodling?” wrote one Twitter user. “Congrats to whoever drew the dick and balls on @theprojecttv Cracking shot!,” wrote another. Bickmore’s co-host eventually pointed out the drawing at the end of the show, drawing her attention to what had happened, but that didn’t stop #CarrieDickmore from making its way across the internet.
Bickmore tweeted after the show that she was “so embarrassed” about the incident, blaming the drawing on a joke about former host Charlie Pickering’s sign-off. “OMG! So embarrassed! Was laughing with audience in the break about what @charliepick signed at the end of every show! #CharliesRevenge #oops,” Bickmore tweeted.
Pickering, who left the show after five years in April this year, revealed via Twitter after his last episode that he signed off at the end of every show with a drawing of a penis. Co-host Peter Helliar found the whole thing highly amusing. “I take one night off @BickmoreCarrie and you take @theprojecttv to the gutter!!! #hilarious,” he tweeted.
