Coles Launches Stick-On Mobile Wallet

Australian supermarket chain Coles is launching a new stick-on payment system connected to its range of credit cards which allows customers to buy groceries and collect rewards points without having to carry any cards.

The Coles Mobile Wallet will be available to all Coles credit card customers, allowing them to pay without a card and collect FlyBuys points simply by tapping their phone at the check-out. The Pay Tag sticks to the back of a smartphone and can be used at POS terminals that accept MasterCard PayPass payments. Users can also view their account balance, available credit, transaction history, and see the due date of their credit card bill.

“We understand that Coles customers are doing even more from their mobile devices,” said Coles general manager of financial services Richard Wormald. “With this in mind, it is exciting to launch the Coles Mobile Wallet which puts customers in control of their spending and introduces Australians to an entirely new way to pay.”

The retailer said that trials have found 77 percent of customers preferred the use of the stick-on Pay Tags to paying with a plastic credit card. Customers can “tap and pay” by swiping their phones at the checkout. Similar to the payWave option, for purchases over $100 Mobile Wallet customers must continue to enter a pin number.

Customers will need to download the Coles Mobile Wallet app which is currently available for both iOS and Android users. Coles say their Pay Tag can be turned on and off using the app. The retailer also says the app is secure, with an in-built chip “providing protection against personal details being copied.”
