This week, Disney is kicking off its stewardship of Star Wars with the new animated series, “Star Wars Rebels.” And 24 hours ahead of the official premiere, Disney has already given the greenlight for another season.
Earlier today, Disney made it official with an announcement from Lucasfilm VP of Creative Development Kiri Hart, who said “We all love making ‘Rebels,’ so we couldn’t be happier that it’s moving into a second season. Our fantastic creative team is dreaming up new stories for the crew of the Ghost that will expand their experience of the galaxy and deepen their heroes’ journeys. The fan response to the show has been amazing, humbling and inspiring. We’re looking forward to the adventure ahead.”

However, the second season of “Star Wars Rebels” will proceed without Greg Weisman. Weisman was part of the team that developed “Star Wars Rebels,” but he is best known as the creator Disney’s “Gargoyles,” and for his work on “Young Justice” and “The Spectacular Spider-Man” animated series. Newsarama has confirmed Weisman’s departure, but Weisman has yet to issue a statement of his own.
Dave Filoni will remain with “Star Wars Rebels,” alongside Simon Kinberg, with Henry Gilroy as the Co-Executive Producer and Supervising Writer.
“Star Wars Rebels” will premiere as a one hour TV movie on Disney Channel on Friday, October 3. The weekly series will begin on October 13, on Disney XD.
