Watch John Oliver Diss Australian Music, Koalas & Vegemite

Talk show host John Oliver has pointed his satirical cross-hairs at Australia, and pulled the trigger on our music, food, politics and culture.

During a recent episode of Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, the comedian’s razor-sharp wit tore into Midnight Oil, Australia’s native animals and Vegemite, “which tastes like a kangaroo took a salty shit in a jar”.

After covering the faux-drama that recently surrounded actor Johnny Depp’s two dogs, Pistol and Boo, Oliver said America would give Australia 50 hours to get every Australian thing out of the US.

As the video below shows, this includes “every shitty music album you’ve ever sent over here, especially Midnight Oil”. Iconic Aussie releases by Silverchair, Jet and Savage Garden are also put directly in the firing line, as is the dancing style of Midnight Oil’s Peter Garrett.

Rupert Murdoch and Mel Gibson will have to come back home too, but Oliver and his crew are hoping to keep Hugh Jackman.

It doesn’t seem like they want (New Zealand born) Russell Crowe though, seeing as Oliver has named Australia as, “Not just the country where Russell Crowe lives, but very much the Russell Crowe of countries.”

Thankfully, we’ll have the chance for revenge once Oliver brings his stand-up comedy talents down under for the very first time this August.

Still, after Jimmy Fallon’s recent Vegemite experience, did the salty yeast extract really need another diss?

Watch Oliver give Aussie culture his best satirical bashing, below.
