Netflix has made another aggressive move for its original programming. Barely a week after it was first pitched, the new remake of the Norwegian series Maniac has received a straight-to-series order from Netflix.
According to Deadline, Maniac will star Jonah Hill and Emma Stone in their first live-action starring roles on television. Hill and Stone previously co-starred in Superbad (pictured above). Maniac is being directed by Cary Fukunaga, who is best known for helming the first season of HBO’s True Detective. Fukunaga’s feature film, Beasts of No Nation was also distrusted by Netflix last year.
The original Maniac series debuted in 2014, and it followed a man who is institutionalized in reality, but he embraces a fulfilling fantasy life in his imagination. Hill will play the main character in the American adaptation of Maniac, while Stone will also star as one of the other patients at the institution.

Maniac is being produced by Paramount TV and Anonymous Content. The first season will be 10 half-hour episodes. Hill and Stone are also attached as executive producers alongside Fukunaga. However, Maniac doesn’t currently have a writer attached to the project, and Netflix is reportedly evaluating candidates to join the project as the showrunner.
Currently, Netflix hasn’t announced a production schedule for Maniac, but it’s likely to begin filming later this year for a late 2016 or early 2017 release.
