Gearbox Software has announced that Borderlands 3 is officially on its way, with it set to be the developer’s next game after the studio wraps up work on its upcoming MOBA/FPS crossover Battleborn and its subsequent DLC.
While it was inevitable that a new Borderlands game would be on its way at some point in the near future, this is the first confirmation we’ve received that Gearbox has a timeline regarding when it will start developing the game. During a panel at PAX East 2016, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said: “It’s no secret, obviously there’s going to be another Borderlands,” adding: “We don’t even know if we’re going to call it that. We could call it Borderlands 4 for all we know.”
Pitchford also teased that Gearbox may include Easter eggs for Borderlands 3 in future Battleborn DLC, saying: “There’s already a lot of Borderlands easter eggs in Battleborn, but they’re all from previous Borderlands games. So what if we put easter eggs for future stuff in the DLC?” Creative director Randy Varnell confirmed that this could be a possibility, replying: “We could do that.”
While Borderlands 3 won’t be released any time soon given Gearbox have yet to launch Battleborn, a game which will demand plenty of their attention, it’s at least confirmation for fans of the series that a sequel is on its way.
