The CW has found its greatest success with genre shows. That’s not going to change any time soon.
Deadline is reporting The CW has added Supergirl to its lineup, in addition ordering the Archie Comics-inspired Riverdale to series as well as an adaptation of the film Frequency and a show called No Tomorrow. Supergirl’s renewal and network jump from CBS had been rumored for weeks and it was contingent upon bringing the budget for that series down. While Supergirl was CBS’ most expensive show, it also averaged 10 million viewers per week, which would make it the highest-rated show on The CW even if it only kept half of that audience next season.
Riverdale began as a series proposal at Fox that died in development before The CW resurrected it last year. It’s the only non-DC Comics comic book related series. Aside from iZombie, the other DC shows, Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and now Supergirl share continuity. Although Supergirl’s adventures are technically set on another Earth.
The full lineup of The CW’s new and returning series will be announced later this month. In the meantime, here are the descriptions of each new show:
RIVERDALE
Set in present day and based on the iconic Archie Comics characters, “Riverdale” is a surprising and subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome façade.
NO TOMORROW
When a risk-averse, straight arrow, female procurement manager at an Amazon-like distribution center falls in love with a freewheeling man who lives life to the fullest because he believes the apocalypse is imminent, to comedic and poignant results they embark on a quest together to fulfill their individual bucket lists.
FREQUENCY
In this reimagining of the New Line Cinema film, a female police detective in 2016 discovers she is able to speak via a ham radio with her estranged father (also a detective) who died in 1996. They forge a new relationship while working together on an unresolved murder case, but unintended consequences of the ‘butterfly effect’ wreak havoc in the present day.
