The 65th edition of the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) has revealed its First Glance lineup of films for 2016, giving punters a first look at the huge program the festival is set to boast across 18 days this July and August.
MIFF’s 2016 First Glance lineup includes films like Louis Theroux‘s My Scientology Movie, which is the documentarian’s first made-for-cinema project, and sees him attempt to wrap his head around what life is like inside the Church Of Scientology.
Other MIFF films announced today include Abe Forsythe’s post-Cronulla Riots black comedy Down Under; Danish director Anders Thomas Jensen’s first directorial effort in ten years, Men & Chicken; a look at love across six short films from six filmmakers, including Aussie Mia Wasikowska and musician Natasha Khan (aka Bat For Lashes), in Madly; and Danny DeVito directing, producing and starring in Curmudgeons.
Aside from its usual mix of international and local features, documentaries, short films and world premieres, MIFF is launching some bold new categories this year, including the Headliners section, which will see some of the biggest films in the world displayed in a beautiful theater.
MIFF is also set to host a special virtual reality program this year, which promises to push the boundaries of contemporary storytelling.
MIFF’s Artistic Director Michelle Carey says, “There is much that is new at MIFF this year – including our exciting new section, Headliners, and a deep exploration of what’s new and what’s next in virtual reality.
“But then there are the films! 2016 is proving to be a massively strong year in features, docs, shorts and local productions that impress in their breadth. Come explore with us!”
This year’s MIFF program is shaping up to be even bigger than last years, so head over to the MIFF website for the full list of films which have already been confirmed for the event. The full program of over 300 titles will be announced on 5th July 2016, and the festival kicks off with the world premiere of The Death and Life of Otto Bloom on 28th July.
