True Blood may be dead as a TV series, but it’s not ready for a final stake just yet! In fact, it may rise from its grave as a Broadway musical.
The New York Post is reporting that HBO is developing the True Blood musical with Young Adult author Elizabeth Scott writing the story and the lyrics, with music by True Blood composer Nathan Barr. Series creator Alan Ball is said to be “keeping an eye on the stage version,” which suggests that he is not actively involved. According to the Post, there was actually a workshop staged with Broadway veterans.
True Blood was based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries novels by Charlaine Harris and it ran for seven seasons on HBO. Presumably, the musical would once again initiate the telepathic waitress, Sookie Stackhouse into a supernatural landscape that includes vampires and werewolves who lust after her. But it would take quite a bit of effort to condense that story into the length of a standard Broadway play.

Although he wasn’t a part of the series until the third season, we think that the True Blood musical would be incomplete without the flamboyant Russell Edgington, as portrayed by Denis O’Hare in the series. If there was ever a character ready-made for Broadway, it’s the vampire king of Mississippi!
However, The New York Post noted that vampire musicals don’t exactly have a good track record on Broadway. Musicals based on Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles and The Fearless Vampire Killers ranked among the biggest flops in Broadway history. Whether a True Blood musical can improve on that remains to be seen.
