Netflix has announced that following on from the massive success of their shocking documentary series Making A Murderer the streaming giant has commissioned more episodes of the series.
Season one tells the story of how Steven Avery was wrongfully imprisoned for 18 years for a rape he didn’t commit, only to be thrown back in prison this time accused of the murder of reporter Teresa Halbach. Series two will follow Avery and his co-defendant Brendan Dassey as the two appeal their convictions for the murder of Halbach.
Both sentenced to life in prison for the murders, and with the evidence stacked against them, Avery maintains that local law enforcement have a grudge against him and planted evidence in order to get a conviction.
Executive Producers/Directors Moira Demos and Lauren Ricciardi are currently in production on the new episodes, with the new season taking an in-depth look at the U.S. Justice System’s appeals process.
“This next chapter will provide an in-depth look at the high-stakes post-conviction process, as well as, the emotional toll the process takes on all involved,” read a press release put out by Netflix.
Offering exclusive access to Avery’s new lawyer Kathleen Zellner and Dassey’s legal team, led by Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin, the series will also focus on the families and characters close to the case. Demos and Ricciardi being granted incredibly intimate access to all involved, season two promises to be just as heart wrenching as the first.
“We are extremely grateful for the tremendous response to, and support of, the series. The viewers’ interest and attention have ensured that the story is not over, and we are fully committed to continuing to document events as they unfold,” said Ricciardi and Demos.
Speaking of the series, Netflix VP of Original Documentary Programming Lisa Nishimura praised Ricciardi and Demos for so masterfully bringing Avery and Dassey’s story to the screen.
“Because of Ricciardi’s and Demos’ incredible vision, commitment and a keen eye, audiences around the globe became completely captivated by the personal stories of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey and the unique lens their experiences provide into the criminal justice system,” she said.
“We’re thrilled to be continuing our longstanding relationship with the filmmakers, and look forward to giving our global viewers eagerly anticipated updates on this story.”
There is no word yet on how many episodes we’ll get, or when we’ll get them.
