Yesterday, The CW officially revealed plans for a two-part musical crossover episode between Supergirl and The Flash that would take advantage of the singing skills of Melissa Benoist, Grant Gustin, Jesse L Martin, and Carlos Valdes. Back when The CW was still UPN and The WB, Buffy the Vampire Slayer famously delivered a very well-crafted musical episode by director and writer, Joss Whedon, went on to eventually direct the first two Avengers movies. Now, a new rumor suggests that Whedon may be coming back to TV to bring this superhero musical to life!
That Hashtag Show is reporting that Whedon is “locked” to direct both episodes of the Supergirl and The Flash crossover. But as Bleeding Cool points out, if Whedon was really set to go then his involvement would have been announced at yesterday’s Television Critics Association Press Tour. That means that either Whedon isn’t locked in yet, or he’s not involved at all. There’s not much middle ground there.

We would actually be thrilled if this rumor came to pass, since Whedon’s work on the Buffy musical and Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog was fantastic. As far as anyone knows, Whedon hasn’t lined up another film since Age of Ultron, which potentially means that it is possible.
That Hashtag Show also reported that the villain of the crossover will be the Music Meister, a character created for the Batman: The Brave and the Bold musical episode. Neil Patrick Harris originated the role of the Music Meister, and THS seems giddy about the possibility of Harris reprising his part in live-action. That said, even THS acknowledges that Harris’ involvement is only speculation at best.
The Supergirl and The Flash musical crossover episodes will air in early 2017 on The CW.
