The crew of the Ghost and the burgeoning Rebel Alliance have proven to be formidable foes for the Empire through the first two seasons of Star Wars Rebels. But this season, the Empire has an ace up its sleeve. Or more specifically, a Grand Admiral.
Despite being wiped away from continuity when Disney purchased Lucasfilm, fan-favorite villain Grand Admiral Thrawn is set to make his animated debut during Star Wars Rebels season 3. And unlike the rebels’ previous adversaries, Thrawn isn’t afraid to take a loss or two with an eye towards the big picture. In his previous incarnation, Thrawn was a master strategist who was adept at using the strength of his enemies against themselves. So far, it looks like this version of Thrawn will remain true to that portrayal.
Disney XD has debuted a new clip from Star Wars Rebels season 3 which finds Hera, Chopper, and Ezra undercover in an Imperial compound. And while Thrawn may not have seen through their disguises, Hera has captured his attention…and that’s definitely not a good thing for her!

Here’s Disney’s description of the upcoming third season:
“Having established a secret base on Atollon, the Ghost crew, now led by a more powerful Ezra, strengthens the rebel fleet by acquiring new resources and recruits eager to stand against the Empire. However, the Imperial efforts to eliminate the rebellion are now being led by the coldly analytical Grand Admiral Thrawn, whose strategic, tactical and cultural insights make him a threat unlike any they have faced before. In season three, Ezra and Sabine take on new roles and challenges as the rebels prepare for their biggest mission yet – a direct assault on the Empire.”
Star Wars Rebels season 3 will begin on Saturday, September 24.
