For the last six years, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have sporadically co-starred in the smash hit, Sherlock; which modernized Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s great detective and made both of its leading actors into international superstars. But the upcoming fourth season of Sherlock could finally bring the show to a close, if Cumberbatch’s latest comments are correct.
While speaking with the British version of GQ, Cumberbatch said “It might be the end of an era. It feels like the end of an era, to be honest. It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately. We never say never on the show. I’d love to revisit it, I’d love to keep revisiting it, I stand by that, but in the immediate future we all have things that we want to crack on with and we’ve made something very complete as it is, so I think we’ll just wait and see.”

This isn’t exactly a surprise. While both Cumberbatch and Freeman have remained loyal to the show, production delays have plagued the series due to the movie commitments for each man. It’s incredibly challenging to keep finding time for them to film the season together, and it’s not getting any easier. That said, Cumberbatch offered some hope that the series could continue down the line…if not immediately after they wrap the fourth season. “The idea of never playing [Sherlock Holmes] again is really galling.” Fans of the series are likely to agree with that.
The fourth season of Sherlock is expected to debut on BBC One in early 2017, but it’s anyone’s guess when PBS will broadcast the series in the United States.
