“Love$ick” by Mura Masa (featuring A$AP Rocky)
Mura Masa is a DJ/producer without a past whose music is steeped in it. At just 19, you can hear the English teen’s (real name Alex Crossan) many influences which range across the Soundcloud dial: dancehall, hip-hop East Asian, and garage house beats. It draws from an impressive sound palette a la Jamie XX, but is a bit more frivolous and colorful.
“Blood In The Cut” by K. Flay
K.Flay is the first signing to Imagine Dragons’ frontman Dan Reynolds imprint Night Street/Interscope Records, but don’t hold that against her — I kid, I kid. There are a lot of introspective, female empowering artists out there right now, but none like this Chicago-born, Stanford-educated musical multi-hyphenate, who blows out the typical torch bearing songs with snarling raps and head-banging hip-hop/experimental electronic beats.
“Hello Miss Lonesome” by Marlon Williams
“Hello Miss Lonesome” came out in 2015, but it’s new to me, having come across this Kiwi country crooner recently at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Country music is not about where you’re from, but where you’ve been. At its origins, its about heart and soul and Williams has that in spades as you can hear from this ramblin’ on, sing-along.

“Frequency” by Kid Cudi
Kid Cudi has been filling up your timelines lately for all the wrong reasons. First, there was him firing Twitter shots at Kanye and Drake, then he checked himself into rehab for depression and suicidal urges (which is actually admirable to admit), but now the talented rapper/actor is making online news for all the right reasons with a new track and music video for “Frequency.” The hypnotic song and transformative video show that Kid Cudi aka Scott Mescudi might be emerging from a dark place a better man and musician.
“True Killer” by Sneaks
Sneaks is Urban Outfitted post-punk rock for the SnapChat generation. D.C. musician Eva Moolchan makes DIY, minimalist songs that are short, sweet and self-amusing — part poetry, part lyrical gymnastics — all modern angst, the two-minute ditties are like melodic streams of consciousness after a vape hit.
