You know you’re having a weird year when even the Razzies are getting political. The Golden Raspberry Awards, aka “The Razzies,” have been giving out awards for the worst movies of the year since 1981, and in the over 30 years that followed they’ve typically singled out embarrassing box office bombs and absurd blockbusters, like Howard the Duck, Showgirls and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Fifty Shades of Grey. But this year, for the first time in the history of the Razzies, they’ve given the Worst Picture trophy to a political documentary.
Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party is the latest propaganda film from Dinesh D’Souza, who previously made headlines with his anti-Barack Obama documentary 2016: Obama’s America and for pleading guilty to making illegal campaign donations. Dinesh D’Souza won the Razzie Awards for Worst Actor (he played himself) and Worst Director, an award he shares with Bruce Schooley. Hillary’s America also won the Razzie for Worst Actress, singling out Rebekah Turner’s performance as Hillary Clinton.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice alsowon four Razzies, for Worst Supporting Actor (Jesse Eisenberg), Worst Screen Combo (Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill), Worst Screenplay (Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer) and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel.
Kristen Wiig won the Worst Supporting Actress award for her baffling performance in Zoolander 2. Meanwhile, Mel Gibson won the “Razzie Redeemer” Award for making an actually good movie: Hacksaw Ridge, which has been nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director (Mel Gibson) and Best Actor (Andrew Garfield).
The last “winner” of the evening was the drama Misconduct, starring Josh Duhamel, Alice Eve, Malin Akerman, Al Pacino and Anthony Hopkins. The film won the “Barry L. Bumstead Award,” which is bestowed to films that would have been nominated for the Razzie Awards had it not been deemed ineligible. Misconduct received a very small release, and is available on VOD from Lionsgate Premiere.
