Black Monday

Mandatory Tweets: The Funniest Reactions to NFL’s “Black Monday” Coach Firings

With the 2021 NFL season in the books, that can only mean one thing – some people are about to get fired. Every year, NFL owners participate in “Black Monday,” a process that sees a wave of head coaches and front office executives relieved of their duties. Typically, this begins after the last game of the season. But in recent years, owners have moved to give coaches & GMs the ax even faster, hence the name.

While some coach firings can be seen from a mile away, there is almost always a surprise. With over half a dozen coaches on the hot seat this year, there were several of them. Along with two mid-season resignations/firings (Jon Gruden & Urban Meyer), the expected firings included Matt Nagy (Bears), Mike Zimmer (Vikings), and Vic Fangio (Broncos).

In a shocking move, however, Brian Flores (Dolphins) also lost his job after finishing the latter half of the season 8-1. Meanwhile, Matt Rhule (Panthers), Pete Carroll (Seahawks), and Joe Judge (Giants) have all seemingly managed to keep their jobs after losing seasons. Sometimes the world just isn’t fair, but that’s the NFL for ya.

It’s important to remember that these are real people with real consequences. And especially when it comes to the NFL coaching carousel, everyone seems to be an armchair quarterback. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop Sports Twitter from doing what it does best – both celebrating and decrying the various coaching casualties of the 2021 season. Here are some of the funniest reactions to the NFL’s Black Monday 2022.
