Bill Clinton Notes Why US Isn’t Quite Ready for a Female President

Bill Clinton has shared his thoughts on why the U.S. is not quite ready for a female president. The country is still in the aftermath of Vice President Kamala Harris‘ loss to President-elect Donald Trump during this year’s election. Previously, Clinton also spoke in support of the Harris-Walz presidential campaign before the election day. Now, the former president has noted it would be “easier for a conservative Republican woman to win” in elections.

Bill Clinton says it would be ‘easier’ for a conservative Republican woman to win elections

During an interview with CBS News, Bill Clinton spoke about his new book “Citizen: My Life After the White House.” The former president also shared his disappointment over the 2024 election result but admitted he wasn’t surprised. When asked if he thinks part of the issue is that America not being ready for a female president, Clinton replied, “Maybe.” He added, “I think in some ways we’ve moved to the right as a reaction to all the turmoil.”

Clinton noted that if Hillary Clinton, his wife and the 2016 presidential candidate, “had been nominated in 2008, she would’ve walked in, just like Obama did.” Interviewer Tracy Smith then asked if the country had changed. Clinton said, “Well, I think all these cultural battles that we’re fighting make it harder in some ways for a woman to run.” However, he later admitted he does think “it would probably be easier for a conservative Republican woman to win.”

Nonetheless, Clinton is hopeful the country will have a female president “pretty soon.” Later, Smith asked “how soon” would that happen. The 78-year-old joked he doesn’t know how long he will live, further saying, “You’re askin’ an old man that question.” However, Clinton hopes he is still around for the next time. He also noted that it’s “President Trump’s turn in the barrel,” so “it depends on what he does and how it plays.”
