The Menendez brothers‘ resentencing hearing has been rescheduled to a new date in 2025. At a court hearing update on November 25, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic said that the resentencing hearing for Erik and Lyle Menendez would be pushed to January 30. It was originally scheduled for December 11. This marks the brothers’ first hearing since 1996 when they were sentenced to life in prison for murdering their parents in August 1989.

Erik and Lyle Menendez’s resentencing hearing will now take place on January 30. CNN exclusively reported that Judge Michael Jesic rescheduled the hearing to give the new district attorney time to read up on and review the case. Nathan Hochman will be replacing the current Los Angeles County D.A. George Gascón next week.
The Menendez brothers, currently detained in San Diego, joined the status hearing virtually. The siblings were initially supposed to appear on camera for the hearing. However, technical issues reportedly led to only their voices being heard in the courtroom. No cameras were allowed inside the courtroom as part of strict restrictions. As per a news release from the L.A. Superior Court, only a few civilians were allowed to enter the hearing through a lottery system.
Through a habeas petition in 2023, the Menendez brothers’ attorneys asked the judge to reconsider the judgment in light of new evidence. Moreover, the Netflix drama “The Menendez Brothers” also sparked a lot of public interest. The BBC spoke to a few attendees of Monday’s hearing, who won the raffle tickets as part of the lottery. Peggy Savani decided to attend the hearing and supported the brothers’ bid for freedom. International students Greta and Anna, who grew curious about the case after watching the Netflix series, also joined the crowd to witness the hearing.
The family of the victims — Jose and Kitty Menendez — also pleaded for the brothers’ release. Kitty’s sister, Joan VanderMolen, and Jose’s sister, Terry Baralt, believed their nephews should come home now after spending decades in prison.
This news of the rescheduled trial date comes after Lyle Menendez’s wife, Rebecca Sneed, announced their separation on social media. In a post from Lyle’s Facebook account, she revealed that the couple were separated. However, they have continued to remain good friends.
