Julian Assange Joins Splendour In The Grass Lineup

Too much indulgence and not enough mental stimulation? This month’s Splendour in the Grass will feature WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange as one member of a prominent panel discussing the topic “Can we trust the media?” on day one of the music festival.

Australia’s premier winter music festival doesn’t seem content with just headlining likes of The National, Frank Ocean, Mumford & Sons and Empire of the Sun and have booked Assange to appear alongside comedian Dan Ilic (Hungry Beast) Dominic Knight (The Chaser), journalist Andrew Crook (Crikey), writer/comedian Alice Fraser and Network Ten boss Russel Howcroft (Gruen Transfer), to be moderated by former Fairfax online editor Hugh Martin, for a debate about trust in the media.

Assange unfortunately won’t be live in the flesh- he’ll be appearing via video link-up from his base in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

The man behind so many of the world’s biggest political headlines of the past year is actually making his second Splendour appearance. He was ‘present’ at Splendour In The Grass at Woodford in 2011, reading a speech in a pre-recorded video (see below).

Taking place at ‘Tipi Forest’ on day one (Friday), between 2:30 and 4pm, the debate won’t clash with any major acts.

Having recently announced his intent to run for a seat in the Australian senate this year, Splendour may be the final opportunity to catch Julian Assange before he becomes a ‘celebrity’.
