ACL 2013 Interview: Deap Vally on Austin City Limits, Spotify & Beyond

Deap Vally, the Los Angeles rock-blast duo of Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards arrive October 8th in the U.S. with their Cherrytree/Interscope debut Sistrionix, and have already amassed a growing cult after some legendarily ferocious live performances. If you miss the White Stripes and aren’t intimidated by enough attitude to make Alison Mosshart and Courtney Love take notes, keep your schedule open for Deap Vally’s head-crackin’ charms next weekend at Austin City Limits 2013, where the ladies will take the stage alongside touring partners Queens of The Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon & more.

We caught up with Julie & Lindsey before their two-weekend ACL run for a brief interview on festivals, streaming and what comes next for the ladies now that Sistrionix is starting all the right fires in the music world.

Your recording process for Sistrionix was fragmented over the course of a year, with lots of touring and time between sessions. Looking forward to the next steps you guys take in the studio, do you plan to stick with that format, or attempt a more structured, linear recording process?

We haven’t made plans for that yet.  Our record just came out in the States!  That means lots more touring. Ideally it would be nice to focus, but you can’t plan for inspiration, so it will come together however it feels!

Outside of the States, where have you seen the biggest reaction to Deap Vally?

The UK.

Tina Turner or Joan Jett?

I don’t subscribe to a two party system.

Did you know Christopher Walken was a lion tamer before he got famous? That’s fucking amazing.

Wow.  Lions are hot.

Streaming has been essential in getting the Deap Vally name out there – how does that factor into your feelings about illegal downloads?

This is a very controversial question. But it seems like nowadays artists must allow their music to be as readily available as possible.  I (Julie) personally adore Spotify. But it’s hard to say  It would be nice to sell records for all our effort.

Name one Deap Vally song you’d recommend to be people’s first impression of the band.

End of the World

What’s your favorite music festival to play?

Eurockeennes in France.

With Austin City Limits coming up, did organizers give you any guidelines about varying performances between week one and two? When Coachella expanded to two weekends, they made a big deal out of promoting the idea that both weekends would be nearly identical in execution – but what the hell is the fun in that?

Uh. No I don’t know of any such guidelines. I’m guessing the point of two weekends is to sell twice as many tickets, not offer the same audiences two different festival experiences…

The obligatory festival question, of course: Who are you most amped to see on the lineup?

Atoms for Peace!!!!!!!!!

What do you do to fire yourself up on the nights when the last thing you want to do is get onstage?

Well, it’s a job. You just do your job like any other job. You just do it. And we do it well. We take a lot of pride in having a great live show. So we bring it whether we’re in the mood or not. That’s showbiz.
