GTA V Was 2013’s Best Selling Game, Call of Duty: Ghosts Tops Next-Gen Launch Sales

Finishing up 2013, NPD Group has revealed its numbers for the year, and although sales are down year-over year by 11% several games performed extremely well, particularly Grand Theft Auto V and Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Some estimate that GTA V is near 30 million copies sold to-date, so it comes as no surprise that it was by far the best-selling game of 2013. It did, after all, break the entertainment sales record for most units sold. However, it wasn’t made available on the PS4 or Xbox One, so therefore Call of Duty: Ghosts gets to take home the award for best-selling next-gen launch title.

Here are the top 10 selling games of 2013:

1. Grand Theft Auto V (360, PS3)
2. Call Of Duty: Ghosts (360, PS3, XBO, PS4, PC, NWU)
3. Madden NFL 25 (360, PS3, PS4, XBO)
4. Battlefield 4 (360, PS3, XBO, PS4, PC)
5. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (360, PS3, PS4, XBO, NWU, PC)

9. Minecraft (360)
10. Disney Infinity (360, WII, PS3, NWU, 3DS)

Here’s what it looks like if you only include December 2013:

1. Call Of Duty: Ghosts (360, PS3, XBO, PS4, NWU, PC)
2. Battlefield 4 (360, XBO, PS4, PS3, PC)

Not much has changed over the years, with EA, Ubisoft, and Activision publishing 9 of the 10 best-selling games of the year. Minecraft‘s imaginative concepts managed to perform extremely well giving some hope for future developers who choose to go the creative route.
