10 Best Songs About Football

On the flipside, this rap throwdown about the awesomeness of the Wildcats, is as close to spectacular as you can get. Technically it’s a cover of the LL Cool J jam that appeared on the soundtrack, but the Wildcats take it to a whole new level. If seeing a young Wesley Snipes try to rap doesn’t make you laugh, then perhaps the rhyming styles of a pre-Cheers Woody Harrelson (he made the film before joining the cast) will rock you. If neither of those work, you will be forced to fall in love with Goldie Hawn saying “football”.

This was a surprise. A tender and emotional story about a high school quarterback trying to come back from a losing position The young QB realizes that the moment he’s in is perfect and special. “All Kinds Of Time” is an unusually potent and insightful song about a sport like football, which is usually driven by bravado and macho images of war and fighting. Fountains Of Wayne aren’t being ironic or satirical, they genuinely try to tap into this single moment, one that’s probably shared by quarterbacks from high school to pro level.

This might not be a favorite amongst the people of Michigan, but really, you have to give the Dead Schembechlers a lot of credit. They play one show a year, the night before the OSU/Michigan game, they dress like OSU coach Woody Hayes, and then sing endless songs about hating their arch rivals. “I Wipe My Ass With Wolverine Fur” is catchy, and would clearly get the OSU fans riled up. There are also bizarre comic book implications to the song. If used in the right context.

I’m not a huge modern country fan. At all. That being said, those dudes sure can tap into an Americana vein, one that gets folks super pumped for all kinds of red, white and blue goodness. It doesn’t get much more America than football, and Kenny Chesney’s ode to the first glimmer of the new season should resonate with the fans. It’s like football has a new car smell. “Boys Of Fall” is written with a not-too-subtle hint of hero worship, a weird benevolence, and a dash of unnecessary awe towards football players.
