If you’re into some of EA’s best works over the years, we have some bad news for you. EA have announced that during the first week of June online service will be cut off for many of its best works. These games total at over 50, some as old as F1 2002, while others as recent as Crysis 2.
EA has justified the move with the following statement:
Since GameSpy’s announcement, our teams have been working to evaluate options to keep services up and running. Unfortunately, due to technical challenges and concerns about the player experience, we do not have a solution at this time. Online services for EA games on the GameSpy platform will be closed down at the end of June.
As you might gather, this is a move more about the GameSpy infrastructure than it is one about killing off aging and unpopular games. The fact that it has maintained support for games like Battlefield 2 all this time goes to show that EA is committed to having its library available as long as possible. Games like Battlefield 4 and Titanfall could very well still be playable by the time a PlayStation 5 hits the market.
