ACL Recap & Photos: Outkast Live The Legend in Austin

The Honda stage was a suffocating swarm of wild enthusiasm as Andre 3000 and Big Boi took to the stage for a massively celebrated headlining Austin City Limits performance on Friday and gave the crowd of 60,000 the Outkast reunion they’ve been hotly anticipating all year. With a backing band setting the frenzy fuse in the opening instrumentation to “Bombs Over Baghdad,” the hip hop rollercoaster crested its anticipation-climb and set into a breakneck pace for the most anticipated hip hop show of the year.

“Gasoline Dreams” gave way to deep cut “ATLiens” as the crowd all but exploded with hysterical enthusiasm. “Skew It On the Bar-B” and “Rosa Parks” brought an awkward epidemic of white-girl twerking, as ”Hey Ya” and “Ms. Jackson” found the rest of the crowd breathlessly shouted along with every word. Across Zilker Park the crowd for Beck was a great deal smaller, perhaps due to the fact that he’d played Stubb’s the night before – and while he tore the house down with an electrifying lightning-infused set, his nearly identical run of songs at ACL didn’t prove to have staying power.

A giddy Big Boi led the crowd in a brief sing-along of “Deep In the Heart of Texas,” with Andre joking that “all my exes do live in Texas.” The dynamic duo didn’t interact much, but maintained a frequently close stage orbit. If they go their separate ways after this headlining reunion run, they’re certainly going out on a high note.
