Those who are anticipating single-player DLC in Grand Theft Auto V‘s near future will be left disappointed, as Rockstar has confirmed that the company doesn’t have any plans in line to bring a new campaign to GTA V in the vein of GTAIV expansions The Lost and Damned or The Ballad of Gay Tony, with the developer instead focusing upon producing more content for GTA Online.
Speaking in an interview with IGN, Rockstar’s director of design Imran Sarwar was questioned about potential single-player DLC for the game, with him replying: “Right now our focus is on GTA Online which has exceeded our expectations. We currently have all key members of the team that launched Grand Theft Auto V focused on supporting GTA Online in every capacity.”
That’s industry speak for “GTA Online is making us a shitload of money, so we’re putting all of our time into that at the moment, because we like money.”
However, those who are pleased with Rockstar’s focus upon GTA Online may be left disappointed, too, as the company as said that they aren’t focusing upon the mode’s Heists, either, with Imran adding: “[Heists] were a tremendous undertaking and for now we have other ideas for GTA Online that we’re working to deliver.”
While many are clamoring for a single-player expansion or those additional heists, Rockstar will instead be supplying owners of the game with free DLC in the form of new Freemode Events, which will give players different missions to complete whilst exploring the game’s free mode, which is notably barren at the time of this writing.
The Freemode Events will occur at random on the map, and will see players taking part in competitive games and challenges along with other players sharing the same game session. Judging from the announcement on Rockstar’s Newswire, it seems that these events will play out similarly to GTA Online‘s turf wars, in which they will pop up around the map and then players can choose to either take part in them or avoid them.
Rockstar hasn’t confirmed what other plans it has in the pipeline for GTA Online, but these Freemode Events will at least ensure that those who hop into a multiplayer session will find more to do in the game’s open-world than simply murdering strangers and their friends, even if they come at the expense of a story mode expansion.
