The international break has not been kind to Liverpool, as following yesterday’s news that Joe Gomez will be out for the season due to a cruciate knee ligament injury, it has today been revealed that Danny Ings has suffered the same season-ending injury, leaving two of the club’s talented young players to watch their first season under new manager Jurgen Klopp from the sidelines.

Just days after Ings made his debut for England in the national squad’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania on Monday, the 23-year-old suffered the devastating injury in his first training session with Klopp. Ings has proven to be an exciting new prospect for the Merseyside club, scoring three goals in seven games after moving from Burnley on a free transfer during the summer. However, he will now be forced to wait until next season to play for the club again.

This will be a big blow for Ings, with Liverpool players keen to make a good first impression with their new manager following the sacking of Brendan Rodgers. With the club currently languishing in 10th place in the Premier League, Klopp now has a formidable task ahead of him to get the squad back into form, despite Ings and Gomez now being out of commission, Henderson still out with a long-term injury, and both Benteke and Firmino confirmed to miss Liverpool’s upcoming game against Tottenham.

Klopp has stated that the situation at Liverpool is not as poor as many are making out, with the former Borussia Dortmund manager confident that he can oversee their return to form. However, the wealth of injuries suffered by some of his top players will certainly make his job much more difficult, and it remains to be seen who he will choose as his starting eleven for Saturday’s match at White Hart Lane.

Klopp will undoubtedly want to begin his season with a win, and the three points could see Liverpool climb a few spots up from the middle of the Premier League table, as Tottenham only sit one point ahead of them in 8th place. With so many injuries plaguing his squad, though, it will certainly be a challenge for the new manager to right the good ship Liverpool at this early stage in his Anfield career.
