The Weeknd were Canada’s big winners at last night’s American Music Awards, where the artist took home two statues. Celine Dion also sang a tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks in Paris.
The Weeknd took home AMAs for Favorite Male Artist (Soul/R&B) along with Favorite Album (Soul/R&B) for his album Beauty Behind the Madness. He was also one of the performers of the night, taking to the stage with his hit track “The Hills.”
Actor Jared Leto introduced Canadian songstress Dion, saying, “Tonight we honour the victims of the unimaginable violence that has taken place in Paris and around the world. The entire world matters, and peace is possible.” Dion performed Edith Piaf’s “Hymne a L’Amour.”
Other big winners included Justin Bieber, who won best collaboration with Diplo and Skrillex, and One Direction, who took home Artist of the Year.
