Rafa Benitez has now been ousted as Real Madrid manager, with Zinedine Zidane being named as his replacement. However, despite this being one of the most pivotal moments in the La Liga season, the announcement was delayed due to a children’s party taking place in the press conference room.
Sky Sports’ Guillem Balague was on hand to report upon the major development in the Spanish league, but had to inform viewers back home that the reasoning behind Madrid delaying their official announcement of Benitez’s sacking was due to kids playing in the club’s conference room.
“Rafa Benitez has been sacked. He has been told about it. Everything is prepared for the announcement,” Balague told Sky Sports News. “The only reason why it hasn’t happened yet is because the area that Real Madrid want to use for the press conference is being used for a kids’ party…”
After the kids’ party had been concluded, Madrid officially announced that Benitez had been removed from his position at the club, and that the club’s former player Zidane had been promoted to head coach of the first-team after managing their B team since 2014.
Speaking of his new role, the 43-year-old Frenchman said: “I am going to put my heart and soul into this job so that everything works out well.” Madrid have not announced the length of Zidane’s contract, but there has been no mention of him being an interim coach until the club’s owners find a full-time manager, so he could have been hired on a permanent basis.
