Dynamite Relaunches Xena: Warrior Princess Comic Later This Year

There hasn’t been a Xena: Warrior Princess comic in almost ten years, but that will change in just a few short months. Dynamite Entertainment has announced a new Xena comic book series that is slated to launch in April.

Catwoman writer Genevieve Valentine will script Xena’s new adventures alongside artist Ariel Medel. Greg Land and Jenny Frison will provide the covers for Xena: Warrior Princess # 1. According to Dynamite’s description for the first issue, Xena: Warrior Princess will maintain its continuity with the original series.

“After the Twilight of the Gods, the world is precariously uncertain – and Xena and Gabrielle have been missing from it for twenty-five years. Even without Livia, the power of Rome is growing: Caesar is determined to conquer by lies what he can’t conquer by force, and the people at its edges know what’s coming. (All roads lead to Rome, and Rome is hunting.) Xena and Gabrielle scramble to stop him before they have to wage war against a man they once called a friend. But along the way, Xena will have to confront her past against a rogue band of women warriors, and Gabrielle, whose secret visions are becoming prophecy, will have to protect Xena – at any cost.”

If you’re wondering how Xena is still alive after the end of the original TV series, she was revived in Dynamite’s Dark Xena miniseries. But aside from Xena’s crossovers with Army of Darkness, she hasn’t appeared in a solo series since 2006.

Why is Dynamite bringing Xena back now? That’s simple. NBC is planning a big Xena reboot for TV, which means that this is the perfect time for Dynamite to revisit that property. NBC’s Xena is expected to be a complete revamp of the character and concept. It’s not currently known if Dynamite will eventually publish a Xena comic based on the new television series, but the original series is clearly fair game.
