The fate of The Knick on Cinemax is currently unclear, but the second season is out now on Digital HD before the eventual DVD and Blu-ray release.
Jack Amiel and Michael Begler created The Knick, which takes place at a fictionalized version of the Knickerbocker Hospital in New York during the early years of the 20th century, when modern medicine was still at its infancy. Clive Owen starred as Dr. John W. Thackery, and Steven Soderbergh directed all 20 episodes of the series’ first two seasons. Given the events of the season 2 finale, it’s unknown if Owen will return and it seems likely that Soderbergh is also stepping aside from the series.
HBO Home Entertainment has passed along an exclusive video from The Knick season 2, in which production designer Howard Cummings speaks at length about creating the sets for Mt Sinai, a Jewish hospital that was introduced in the series last year.
Here’s HBO’s official description for The Knick season 2:
In the second season, The Knick faces an upheaval, as Dr. John Thackery’s absence (due to his hospitalization for cocaine addiction), a dearth of affluent patients, and financial missteps have led to the board’s decision to shutter the hospital in favor of a new building uptown. In this world of corruption, invention and progress, everyone is searching for the new path that will help him or her survive.
Whether it’s a path toward justice, freedom, love or just plain survival, nothing comes easy. As relocation plans proceed, the gifted but under-appreciated Dr. Algernon Edwards jockeys to become Thackery’s successor as chief of surgery, while fellow doctors, nurses, nuns and administrators grapple with challenges at work and in their private lives.
The Knick season 2 Digital HD will also include the complete “Under Construction” featurette with Cummings, as well as “Inside the Costume Shop” with costume designer Ellen Mirojnick and series stars Andre Holland (Dr. Algernon Edwards) and Juliet Rylance (Cornelia Robertson). The third featurette is called “Invitation to the Ball,” and it depicts the staging of the charity ball from the seventh episode of season 2.
