I’m about to get on a plane for the 15th anniversary of the best festival in America, Bonnaroo. Before takeoff, however, there’s a quality premiere in store from Brooklyn blood brothers Mail the Horse, a featured artist on the weekend’s gargantuan bill.
Mail the Horse’s forthcoming EP, Magnolia (out June 10 – preorder), follows last year’s acclaimed Planet Gates LP and was produced & recorded by Hunter Davidsohn (Frankie Cosmos, Porches, Sheer Mag). Crave is proud to premiere the title track, a cool burn of soul-funk goodness, a ’70s-leaning strutting rocker calling to mind leather tassels and mirrored aviators in a sunshine haze of subtle psychedelia.
When the track breaks down just after the minute-thirty mark, leaving little more than a vocal and softly buoyant bassline, the bayou-grunge gospel splices some vintage Neil Young with a little Credence flair… and goddamn, how are these cats from Brooklyn? Check it out below, premiered exclusively on Crave. And listen for that killer beat & rhythm after 3 and a half minutes. It’s a ride you don’t want to end.
Catch Mail the Horse this weekend at Bonnaroo and later at the Firefly Music Festival this summer, and be sure to pre-order Magnolia before its arrival on Friday.
Keep up with Mail the Horse at their official site, on Facebook and Twitter.
