This year has and will continue to provide us with a healthy heaping of quality video games – at least we hope that’s the case for the titles coming down the pike throughout the rest of the year. However, there are a few titles that have slipped out of the 2012 calendar, much to our dismay. The five games that follow are titles we’d consider killing over if it meant we got to play them a few months early. Look, we aren’t crazy, we just love quality video games, and these titles have all the trappings of fitting that bill.
These are in no particular order.
The day BioShock Infinite finally releases will be the day tears of joy are cried. The game was originally announced back in August of 2010 and has had us captivated ever since.
We thought we were going to get our grubby little hands on the game this year, but a recent delay has pushed the title back to February 2013. We’re just going to have to man up and ride out the delay, hoping the eventual release is worth the extremely long wait.
Naughty Dog’s next was just recently delayed following its pants-crappingly-cool showing at Sony’s E3 press event. The game is looking absolutely fantastic, with the chance of being the savor of the limping zombie/plague genre.
However, we’re going to have to wait until some time in 2013 to get our hands on the title. Sony and Naughty Dog announced the delay and millions of nerds crying out for a good zombie game where suddenly silenced. Tears were had.
It’s a shame Gearbox’s Aliens: Colonial Marines won’t get the chance to take advantage of cross-promotion thanks to Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel film, Prometheus. That could have been some smart synergy that wouldn’t feel like a cheap cash grab. Unfortunately, that won’t be happening, as Aliens: Colonial Marines has been pushed back yet again to February 2013.
We’re dying for a good Aliens game, and Gearbox’s work thus far leads us to believe that they might be on to something great. We’re just going to have to bite our tongues and wait it out.
Controversy notwithstanding, Crystal Dynamic’s Tomb Raider reboot was one of our most anticipated titles of 2012. Hard emphasis on the use of the word “was.” Unfortunately, Tomb Raider has been delayed to March 2013, destroying our chances of experiencing Lara Croft’s origin this year.
It’s high time the video game industry’s leading lady got a mature experience that highlights more than her, ahem, assets and her ability to roundhouse kick endangered species. Too bad we won’t get to experience that this year.
A South Park role-playing game developed by the makers of Fallout: New Vegas with the help of Trey Parker and Matt Stone sounds too good to be true. And it is too good to be true for 2012. South Park: The Stick of Truth was originally planned for a 2012 release after making its debut as the Game Informer cover story back in December of 2011.
Unfortunately, Obsidian Entertainment was hit with layouts in March 2012, resulting in the firing of an undetermined number of staff members working on the game. This slowed the wheels of progress on The Stick of Truth, resulting in the game being delayed until March 2013.
Thankfully, we were presented a nugget of the game’s awesomeness at this year’s E3, which also solidified the game’s early 2013 release. Hopefully, the game’s new release date is set in the thickest of stone. Because if it’s not, the crab people will have their revenge!
